April 10, 2008 - LifeSource™ Canada’s first home blood-pressure monitor that’s “Designed for Women”

Fact: Women over 50 are more likely to suffer from hypertension than males of the same age.

To support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s Red Dress campaign, LifeSource, Canada’s leading supplier of home blood pressure devices, is launching the UA-787W monitor.  “Designed for Women,” the UA-787W has all of the leading features that women expect from a state-of-the-art blood pressure monitor.

Robert Burgy, President of Auto Control Medical, said: “The face of heart disease is changing. To quote the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada: ‘Once considered “a man’s disease”, the number of deaths from heart disease and stroke are now virtually the same for men and women in Canada.’ The Red Dress campaign (symbolized by a red dress), aims to raise awareness among women of ways to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke and, to give them the tools they need to protect themselves. We support this campaign.”

Simple to use, the UA-787W is intended to encourage Canadian women to start monitoring their blood pressure in the comfort of their own homes. Home monitoring allows a person to measure their blood pressure at various times throughout the day. Readings can then be written down in a logbook so that the consumer can review the results with their healthcare professional. This provides a more accurate assessment and minimizes the impact of any “whitecoat hypertension”.

Specific features of the monitor include: a Pressure Rating IndicatorTM  which classifies each reading as red, yellow or green like a stoplight; the Irregular Heartbeat function which provides accurate blood pressure measurements even when an irregular heartbeat occurs; HeartWise™ technology which enables the blood pressure monitor to track the blood flow and pressure during inflation of the cuff, stopping inflation at the proper point to achieve an accurate reading; a 90 reading memory with averaging; an AC adapter, convenient cuff holder, carrying case and colour-coordinated Easy-FitTM cuff that fits most arm sizes.

The UA-787W’s accuracy has been thoroughly tested and it is “Recommended by the Canadian Hypertension Society.” The Heart and Stroke Foundation follows the Canadian Hypertension Society guidelines which state that Canadians should only buy monitors that carry their “Recommended” label.

As a supporter of the Red Dress campaign, Auto Control Medical is contributing up to $70,000 to the campaign to help raise awareness about the risk of heart disease and stroke for women. During the launch period starting on April 1st, each UA-787W box will bear the Red Dress symbol to signal LifeSource’s support for the campaign.

Like all LifeSource blood pressure monitors, the UA-787W will be sold only in pharmacies and medical supply stores across Canada where basic instruction and support is available. The suggested selling price is $99.95.
